I make Wednesday Wishes because it’s my way of praying without any religious affiliation, it’s my way of staying hopeful even when hope seems like it’s in short supply like it is nowadays. It’s hard to stay hopeful when the world around us seems hopeless, but don’t distress; it’s not hopeless, mi gente. It’s not. No doubt about it that there are some effed up things that cannot be ignored and must be dealt with and fixed, but please don’t forget that there are also wonderful things happening that we’re not acknowledging.
We’re lacking balance. The horrible realities are being constantly shoved in front of our eyeballs (and they should be because we need to make changes), but what is missing is coverage of some of the beautiful realities that are co-existing despite the horrors. So please don’t give up, please don’t despair, let’s make this world a better place together one wish at a time. Remember that wishes aren’t magic, they come true because you put the work in behind the scenes. Making the wish is just the first step.
Here’s what I’m wishing for this week…
For myself:
- Progress in terms of my anxiety disorder and getting my body back into some kind of peaceful chemical balance is slow, painfully slow, but there is progress and for that I am beyond grateful. Please keep the progress coming and I’ll continue to do the work on my end. Thank you.
- My beautiful little girl is having her “Moving Forward” ceremony from preschool. She’s been home for the summer, but the school remembered to call and invite her to celebrate her going to kindergarten this fall. May it be a wonderful experience for her. I used to think these kind of ceremonies were ridiculous before I was a parent and now I love them.

For others:
- My lovely and loving friend Jacquie is simply wishing for PEACE. Me too! I want PEACE in capital letters, please.
- Will has been on the search for a fulltime job for a long time. We continue to wish for him to find a position that is career-worthy. I know of a lot of SF City/County institutions that could use a good man like him.
- Kristina would like more energy and motivation. I most certainly want that for her, but I also want to let her know that from where I sit she projects plenty of energy and motivation.
- Mario wants a chance. I want many chances for him. I want a lifetime of overflowing chances and opportunities for him.
- Vidya would like all of her friends “existing and about to be” to be happy and healthy. I want the same for her. I want her to catch as much joy and support as she radiates.
- Liz wants “health and happiness for family and friends!” I want the same for her. She’s been such a great online comadre to me and I’m very grateful.
- Traci had a wish come true!!! Thank you for helping her find the perfect home within her budget. I wish her much happiness in this new home.
- Mari’s daughter interviewed for a job. Please let her get a job offer!
That’s it for me this week. What are you wishing for?

You are so right about – “…what is missing is coverage of some of the beautiful realities that are co-existing despite the horrors.” The news coverage certainly isn’t like it was before the 24/7 news cycle started. Of course social media has many benefits, however it seems the shorten headline blips of twitter and facebook (others too that I’m not familiar with) can just add to the unbalance view of the bigger picture.
Recently on FB a friend posted a picture of a hand painted sign saying something like turning on the radio and hearing about world peace. I had an exchange of comments and replies about it. I don’t think we will hear a news story starting with “Peace broke out in downtown — today”. Not because it couldn’t happen but because the news media would not cover it. Not the type of story to generate ratings. Shaking hands and hugging spreads more goodwill than punches and rock throwing. It apparently doesn’t generate the same level of ratings and likely would not be covered.
Thanks for providing a comment box for my news media rant.

I agree with you. I would love to see more positive news and I think “Peace broke out in downtown…” sounds like an excellent headline.
