Walked by the corner of Haight and Pierce with the family and noticed that the building on the northeast corner got a new paint job. It looks great, but it got me to wondering about what’s going to happen to the bottom orange portion of it with the boarded-up windows in the front.
That spot has been the longtime home of Axum Cafe, an Ethiopian restaurant, owned by Tsegai Berhe, who also owns the Sunshine Grocery store next door. Last year in April there was a post in Hoodline saying that Axum was closed for renovations and would reopen in a couple of months.
A year later the boarded-up windows do not give the appearance that the restaurant is up and running, but if you look on the corner of the building there is a little vertical protruding sign that says “Axum Cafe.” Perhaps the remodel is just taking a lot longer than expected. We shall see.
I hope it does reopen soon because I’d hate to see another longtime Lower Haight business bite the dust only to be replaced by a revolving door of don’t-blink-or-you’ll-miss-them ventures that can’t stand the test of time.
Also, I could go for some Ethiopian food right about now.
