What Latino Icons Look like to Everyone Else

Latino icons according to everyone else VIDEO
A couple of days ago, I saw this video of “Latino Icons According to Everyone Else” by FLAMA and I laughed my pompis off. There are so many things that we take for granted culturally and I guess our icons are on that list.

I’d be willing to bet that if you were to show most Latinos in this country pictures of Don Francisco, El Chavo, Walter Mercado or Celia Cruz, they would have no problem recognizing them or telling you who they are. I mean I don’t even really watch Spanish language TV and I know who these people are because they are HUGE cultural icons that I grew up knowing about through osmosis almost. I’m familiar with who they are and what they look like and I certainly don’t think they are “weird” looking because I’m used to them, but that’s not the case for your average non-Latino American and that’s why this video is cultural comedy gold.

I mean these people could have sworn that Walter Mercado is a woman, but they were not convinced that Celia Cruz was born with ovaries. They also found it very strange that El Chavo is only 8 years old when he has so many wrinkles and poor Don Francisco was confused for someone in organized crime. Too funny!

I think most non-Latinos would make for great interviewees for this video. Part of the fun for me is seeing these icons through other people’s eyes.
