DIY: Aluminum Can Craft

Aluminum can craft

When I found out that you can use a can opener to neatly remove the top off of a soda or beer can, I was thrilled by the aluminum can craft possibilities that quite literally opened up. I love easy crafts and turning aluminum cans into cute vases or holders for other items is pretty darned easy plus it’s a great excuse to use spray paint and I love me some spray paint crafts.

Before I show you how I decorated the aluminum cans, let me show you a few ways to use the finished product.

You can use them as indoor or outdoor utensil holders.

They look equally lovely with flowers or your comb and makeup brushes.

If you leave the top of the aluminum can on, you can make yourself a semi-crushed bud vase with a modern-artsy vibe.

Now, let me show you how you can make your own.

Supplies:

  • Empty, clean and rinsed out aluminum cans
  • Can opener
  • Spray paint in the color(s) of your choice
  • Easy peel circular office labels (optional)

Directions:

Use can opener to remove tops of aluminum cans

Use the can opener to remove the tops of the aluminum cans. Be careful as it will leave at least one sharp edge when you pull the lid off the can.

In a well ventilated area, spray paint the cans according to the directions on the spray paint. Do as many coats as it takes to completely and evenly cover the aluminum cans.

Once the cans are completely dry, they are ready to use however you choose.

If you want to get fancy and do a polka dot pattern on them like I did, you will need two different colors of spray paint and some circular office labels. Start by spray painting the cans whatever color you want the polka dots to be.

Once you have coated the can evenly with that color and it is dry, use circular office labels that are meant to peel off easily to create a design (I had some laying around because I use them to mark things in my planner) , then spray paint the whole thing with the second color of spray paint. You’ll need to do a few coats to cover. Once it is all dry, gently peel off the labels and behold the lovely spots before your eyes.

if you didn’t paint (but that’s part of the fun – right) a Budweiser can it would give a different meaning to a bud vase.
