The Flying Chancla Report: Join the Safety Pin Army and Stick It to Hate

The Flying Chancla Report

Holy caca, gente! Normally I start The Flying Chancla Report with “hola Chulas y Chulos,” but this week I have got to start with “holy caca” because this week has been a caca storm. Mierda has really hit the fan. The elections have shown us just how divided we are as a country and I don’t know how we’re going to come together, but we must.

Reports that “self-identified Trump supporters are harassing minorities, and calling for more organized white supremacy” keep coming in and this kind of hate is unacceptable. Although, the country may not agree on who should have won the election, I think every decent human being can agree that no one should be made to feel afraid because they are seen as the other or less than.

Here’s the good thing, we don’t have to wait for someone else to take action against hate, we can do this individually and yet together in the grander scheme. How? Well, following the example of the United Kingdom after Brexit sparked an uptick in hate crimes, Americans have started wearing safety pins to show solidarity and support for anyone in a marginalized group that is not feeling safe.

The safety pin is meant to symbolize that you are an ally and that someone who is feeling threatened is safe with you. That you will look out for them, defend and call for help if they need it. I’m in and so are many others.

Check out these messages from just a few of the people who are a part of the safety pin army and join us, if you haven’t already.

Today’s outfit of the day is brought to you by compassion, tolerance and human dignity. I am wearing the #safetypin necklace I made last night to stand in solidarity with those among us that feel threatened. It makes it so that I can easily and without words be identified as an ally to anyone from a marginalized group that feels unsafe. The fear is real. The hate is real. The post-election harassment and attacks are real. My commitment to stand on the right side of history is real. If you are in danger, afraid or simply need to know that you are accepted, I am here for you. As a Latina woman, I hope that you are here for me too. Safety, equality and respect are not partisan politics.

I found out about this lovely new movement from some people at a hockey game tonight. This started in the U.K., if you see someone wearing a safety pin, it means that they will help you if you’re being harassed and that they do not care what you look like, where you live, your origins, your religious beliefs, your gender or lack thereof, your sexuality or lack thereof, or anything else. I will be wearing a safety pin from now on, and I suggest you do, too. ~May #lgbt #lesbian #gay #bisexual #transgender #queer #pride #homosexual #heterosexual #ftm #mtf #asexual #demisexual #pansexual #polysexual #skoliosexual #genderfluid #bigender #agender #cisgender #demigirl #demiboy #nonbinary #pinme #safetypin

I am in! You are safe with me. I still believe that people are truly good at heart. Misguided and angry, at times, but I still believe un the essential good of humanity. I will wear a safety pin proudly. (as soon as I find one – LOL!)
