The Flying Chancla Report

The_Flying_Chancla_Report-unknownmami

Hola Chulas y Chulos! It’s time for your weekly dose of The Flying Chancla Report. It’s been quite the week for my chancla. I mean so much has been going on that my chancla doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry. Personally, I’d rather laugh, but you know how chanclas and crying go together.

Here’s what my chancla came across this week:

  • Ahmed Mohamed, a 14-year-old student in Texas, brought a homemade digital clock to school as an engineering project and ended up getting arrested on suspicion of building a bomb because—brown much? Muslim much? The whole thing would be incredibly depressing if it weren’t for Ahmed Mohamed himself. This kid is smart, gracious and good at finding multiple silver linings in the situation. I don’t have much to say about the situation because this young man speaks quite well on his own behalf.

  • A “new” Selena song has been released. It’s a previously unreleased song from the album “Dreaming of You” that was itself posthumously released. Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. (Selena’s dad) said “Recently we have had a lot of fans ask for a song by the name of ‘Oh No (I’ll Never Fall In Love Again)’ by Selena. The song was never recorded professionally but we found a tape where they’re in rehearsal some place…and they recorded the rehearsal. The reason we never released it as one of her songs was because it’s not up to par as far as sound is concerned but years later my son A.B. recorded it with the Kumbia Kingz…we thought that the fans would enjoy it even though it’s not a professional recording.” Press play to give it a listen.

It’s true that it’s not a professional recording, but Selena still sounds wonderful singing it. What do you think?

  • A friend of mine posted a link on FB to a piece in OC Weekly entitled, “Chamoy Dole Whip Is Trending Even Without a Hip Name”—you know my Mexi-merican heart had to go take a look at this bicultural dessert love-child. After reading about it, I had to do a search for proof on social media because if no one posts about it on social media, then does a thing really exist? Well, here are just a couple of the pics I found.

  • The funniest post my chancla came across all week is one from We Are MiTú (disclosure: I write for them from time to time) called, “13 Photos of Hilarious Store Names that Prove Mexicans DGAF”…it is FREAKIN’ comedy genius…here’s just one example of the pics you can find in the post:

Alright, alright. You caught me. I shop at Gualmart. #pirateria to the max! #walmart #gualmart gotta be #tijuana A photo posted by geomagination (@geomagination) on Mar 1, 2014 at 3:12pm PST
