Where I’m From

I am from here and there and a few places you’d never want to visit.

I am from loud voices en Español talking over each other and broken English spoken to make the non-Spanish speaker feel comfortable.

I am from food so delicious you’ll keep eating even when you are full.

I am from laughter that makes your throw your head back with abandon.

I am from love that will always find someone to love.

I am from pain that won’t go away, but pleasure that makes me forget.

I am from anger that fights for what is right.

I am from people who say, “But you don’t look Mexican.”

I am from meztizos that know Mexicans can look like me.

I am from abundant creativity.

I am from stages painted black hours before a performance and costumes held together with safety pins.

I am from wonderful friends and their generosity.

I am from books that helped me escape when I was a child and formed me as an adult.

I am from choices I’ve made that have led to my beautiful family.

Where are you from?

I pinched this idea from Absence of Alternatives, who pinched it from someone else, who pinched it from someone else. Feel free to do the same.

LOVED THIS!  I think my favorite line is – “I am from pain that won’t go away, but pleasure that makes me forget.”

Where am I from?  Many people guess but many are wrong. Middle Eastern? Egyptian? American? Dominican? It’s never where I’m actually from.

I was born in Mexico to a Haitian father that says he’s more fluent in Spanish than my Mexican mother.

This is absolutely beautiful Mami. You are a true artist.

Where I’m from is hard to pin down especially because my heart and mind roam. At times my existence is somewhere else, other times I’m content. I’m from heartbroken people and I long to heal. I’m from people of excellence and I want to be like them. I’m from understanding and acceptance, love and support. I’m from both the systematic and rebellious. I’m from all over the place up and down, black and white, twirling around.

I did one of these a few months ago, and really enjoyed the prompt. It is one of those that makes you remember and think.

This, “I am from books that helped me escape when I was a child and formed me as an adult.” is my heart and life. Books saved me.

Now I want to come to your house for dinner. 😉

First off, this is beautiful! So well written and moving in it’s simplicity and candidness. As for where I’m from, well, that has been a questions I have pondered often. I was born and raised in NYC them moved to MA then to NJ and now feel…displaced? So, I’m just going to see I’m from my mommas pepa™ 🙂

    I am from love.

It’s the only thing I could think of right now…my mom always told my sister and I that, we are from their love, to remember that and to never let anyone else definie us.

    Beautiful post!
