Look what I made! A DIY tin can utensil holder. It’s hard to tell from the picture because you have nothing to compare it to, but it is made from a huge tin can and is holding our large cooking utensils. I was given some ginormous cans of pozole mix and I knew I had to make something out of the empty cans because my abuela taught me that tin cans have many uses. As a kid I thought she was kind of strange for re-using tin cans, but now I realize she was really just an old school eco-concious DIYer. My abuela was shabby chic even before the term shabby chic existed. Live and learn.

Anyhow, let me tell you how I made this DIY tin can cooking utensil holder in case you’re the kind that likes to re-use tin cans too.
Supplies:
- Tin can (the one I used fit 6 pounds 12 ounces of pozole in it when it was full so it’s BIG)
- Spray paint
- Washi tape (Optional)
Directions:
The can needs to have the lid removed, be empty and clean. Make sure you take off any labeling and remove any gluey gunk.
Spray paint the can according to the directions on your spray paint. Make sure you do this in a properly ventilated area. I believe I needed about three coats to cover the can evenly.
Once the paint has dried and set, give the inside a good wash so that it’s ready for your utensils. Before putting your utensils in it, you can decorate the top and bottom with washi tape if you like. Totally your call. The nice thing about washi tape is that if you don’t like how it looks or get sick of it, you can remove it easily and move on.
That’s it.
