Fragmented Fridays

Sometimes a famous person dies and I am taken by surprise by how sad it makes me. At this very moment I find myself crying because I just found out that Davy Jones of The Monkees has died at the age of 66 from a heart attack on Feb. 29, 2012. Perhaps you’ve known me for many years or just a few and never knew that I LOVE Davy Jones, maybe I didn’t even know that I LOVE Davy Jones until this moment, but it’s true I love Davy Jones.

In a youth that was not always peaceful and wonderful, watching The Monkees made me happy  and brought many smiles to my face. I loved my cassette tape of The Monkees and although I no longer have a cassette player, I still enjoy hearing their songs when they come on the radio. It seems that the radio stations favor Pleasant Valley Sunday, which is indeed lovely, but my favorite song showcasing Davy Jones is Cuddly Toy. It’s not just the song I like, it is watching Davy Jones perform it. He is singing about someone else, still I can’t help but think of him as a cuddly toy.

I dare you to watch that video and tell me that Axl Rose of Guns ‘N Roses didn’t steal some of his moves from Davy Jones. Don’t believe me? See for yourself.

Oh sure Axl gets credit for his side-to-side schtick, but I saw Davy Jones do it first. Just sayin’..

Oh and don’t bother telling me that The Monkees weren’t even a real band because I’m not goin’ for it. Perhaps they were a made-for-TV band, but that does not negate their talent.

So Davy, thank you. Thank you for the smiles, the songs, your voice, and charm. Thank you for making my youth a better place to be 30 minutes at a time.

And now your Friday Fortune Cookie
(don’t forget to add “in bed” at the end, if you are so inclined):

“As far as groupies, I never saw any of them.” -Davy Jones

I am sad to have him pass. Well done on noticing that’s where Axl got his moves. I’m trying not to feel too bad, but I keep hearing ‘Daydream Believer” when I close my eyes.

    RIP Davy Jones

I was very fortunate to go to a convention where Davy Jones and Hewy Lewis performed.  I felt like Marsha Brady when Davy Jones stepped out on stage!  It was  very sad news and I shed some tears myself.

A lovely tribute to the Monkees… I grew up with them in the background every now and then.

Well I love the Partridge Family and they weren’t a real band. It was only David Cassidy and Shirley Jones that sung, but it doesn’t stop me being a big fan.

I love the way music touches our souls, and means so much to us in different ways. I was never a Monkee’s fan but I’ll often throw on “Daydream Believer” at the right gig.

I wasn’t a big Monkees fan – not quite my era, but they were definitely a real band and made a real impact!

Are you calling me old, Heather? Just to clarify, I watched The Monkees in reruns, not the original run. I’m old, but not that old.

Nope, not calling you old… I don’t remember having the Monkees on as re-runs either… but I did watch every episode of the Partridge Family in re-runs – I guess it was just a way of saying it was out of my sphere of influence so I don’t have as much personal connection to Davy Jones as you or many others I have read about…

I don’t remember that song.  Last Train to Clarksville was a favorite of mine.  He was our generation’s Justin Bieber, the cute one.  You might enjoy a link to a story about him in my post today.

Right there with ya. And I SO wanted to be Marcia when Davy took her to that dance on that episode of The Brady Bunch. “Girl look what you’ve done to me, me and my whole world……I’m telling you girl”.

I too loved Davy Jones.  He was so cute.  I used to watch reruns of The Monkees when I was younger and the theme song kept running through my mind.  Today, “Daydream Believer” came on my iPod as I was out walking.

I’m so glad to know that there is someone else out there who gets emotional when someone famous passes. I do it too! I used to have Davy Jones’ posters all over my room! LOL

Sad, indeed. Many of my own mornings were that much more cheerful for having MTV on in the background as I dressed for work and listening to The Monkees. RIP Davy Jones. And yes. I agree with you that you saw Davy rock those moves first! Hugs, mami. I cry when a celeb/artist whose presence I took for granted in my life passes on too….

He was a charming fellow. Sadly, I could not watch more than about 30 seconds of that first video–I found the dancing annoying as heck! Surely I, too, grew up with Davy, but I don’t remember him dancing like that; I only remember his smile.

Thanks for linking up! Have a great weekend.

I can’t explain it either, but I’ve been horribly emotional about his death.  Yeah, I was always a fan of the band – pretty big fan, actually – but I was never emotionally invested in the members.  But I dunno – it’s hitting a nerve of significance.
